Are of ONE of these?

A while back we got a brochure at office to take part in the seminar "How to Deal with Unacceptable Employee Behaviour".
It was more for the principal and managers. Being a small office we really did not need to attend this as we have a culture - "Do it as you please - when you please - where you please - as long as you meet the deadlines".
Being a desinger I have never been in a corporate environment - well yes I was for a year in a corporate architecture firm here - but I quit the job...
Design or ideas cannot be time bound or specific, it is a process and a concept or idea has to be massaged, rethought and analysed many times over before one even draws a line. In short it is a continous process.
For me the shower is the best place to get best of the ideas....I sometimes forget I am showering...just waiting to get that Eureka idea like Archimedes.

So here goes a list of Unacceptable Employee Behaviour (At the end honestly comment and let me know if you are one or some of them or better still print this and ask your managers to evaluate you)
1) The Excuse Artist : Misses every deadline and goal, but always seems to be ready with a "good" excuse or to place blame and point fingers at others.
2) The Short Changer : Late to work, early to leave, "stretched" lunches, extended breaks....this person makes an art out of shortening and short-changing the workday, while leaving coworkers "holding the bag"!
3) The Intimidator : Everyone's tip-toeing around this person, lest they incur wrath and anger!. The Intimidator uses fear and bullying tactics to control coworkers and can single-handedly ruin an entire team.
4) The Gossip : The are guys who are waging a verbal warfare....everyplace, everytime....personal attacks, rumors,, carping and criticism are the tools of their trade.
5) The Clod : The master procrastinator who can come up with plenty of excuses as to why a task or a project hasn't been started. And when he does start the project it moves at snails pace..slowing everyone else down
6) The Downer : No matter what, this person is unhappy. maintains a consitently negative, stifling presence and spreads bad news.
7) The Minimalist : Apathetic and low-performing...these unmotivated workers can be counted on to give the "bare minimum". They turn up mediocre performances that are poor enough to frustrate managers but passable enough to keep them employed.
8) The Soap Star : Their continuing "soap opera" of personal problems not only hurts their own productivity, but distracts sympathetic coworkers.
9) The Itch : They need constant attention, reassurance and feedback....and take too much energy and time to manage, you often find yourself sacrificing job responsibilties to help them meet theirs.
10) The Smarty Pants : Challenges your management authority and questions management desicions and creates a harmful undersurrent of "anti management" chatter.

None of these! Wow I am so proud of myself! I think I am a good worker/co-worker! :)

Did you check out my list of Single Women?

Cinderella said...

Ok..that scared me a bit, amd made me thinik of myself.

I aint any of those, but well,

I denied staying till 10pm once to my boss flat out (coz the work dint have any impending deadline).

I like being frank with boss and team-members,and expect the same.

Though at my place evry person ahndles his/her projects on an individual basis.
Its a boss-me-client interaction. So I guess its better to lay the cards on the table without holding anything back, that might hapmer the job.

Where do I land ?

Neetal said...

None of these... however, I sort of recognize few people from my work... who fit some of the list :(

Ankur said...

so far so good as this doesn't apply much to me. but at rare occasions, i tend to b "The Excuse Artist". but the reason will b honest as i'm the one n only person in my team n many new issues sprang up surprisingly to hamper my deadlines.

u get good ideas while in shower. for me, shower is a place where i attain my nirvana. i get peace while showering. no guesses why i stay in the shower for more than 30 minutes on weekend.

now, u plz don't laugh. i get good ideas while watching tv. sometimes while watching some movie, i get a very gud solution for some issue which's nagging me for quite a while. there r instances whn i went to the medical center in my company to think peacefully abt some logic as that's the only place where there's a tv in office!!! but most of the time, they'll b showing arabic news channels.... :(

you're right abt the 'E'- narrowly missed crashing my car yest, I was *so* exhausted.

Each time God pushes me to the limits I feel I will not make it. And yet, I dont know how but I survive.

I have a feeling He must get major kicks out of this, for Him to keep raising the bar each time. and then sitting back and watching if I will make it this time or not.

Romila said...

Good list, but all focussed on the negative aspects.

I see some of my co-workers fitting to this list but most (including me) of 'em actually perform & meet deadlines.

BTW, the titles of these points are so cool...loved "The minimalist" & "The soap star":)

bhai.. i dont know ki how ppl say they dont fall into this... someway or other if u r an employee then u do fall!!!

but yes ppl from creative field.. may be... or may be not, do they think management is best??

Dont know!! :)

Cheers!!!

ceedy said...

@ankur

I know you are absolutly right....well we all go thru different phases I guess....

well in creative fields - there are two ways...
- if its a smaller firm - there is no management structure...we are small teams of 2-3 plus associate or a chief desinger and interaction with clients

- if it is a bigger firm then yes...the management is usually oblivious to how things get done and there is always a scuffle between the two

Pavi!!!! said...

Hi Ceedy,
Yes, these are the usual problem employees in any business organizations. Each one must learn to sublimate his own interest for the beterment of the organization. Everybody must learn the essence of teamwork so that shared goals can be accomplished. Kobe Bryant of Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA proved this to himself when he could not earn a championship all by his do-it-all self. When he involved his team mates in the overall flow of the game, that's where they earn their championship. So it is in any group undertakings. The cooperation of everybody is essential for the success of the group. Thanks for the valuable post. God bless.

funny thing is, even though I hate it at times, the edge has become a fascination now- life doesn't feel the same when smooth. I guess He is slowly moulding me into the shape He knows is best for me.

Deepali said...

None of the above - though I know some people who fit the categories.

I think the list is cases of extreme behaviour. While most employees will not fit into these categories they all have some or the other weakness.

When it comes to my efficiency / effectiveness, I would wish I didnt have some personality trains that I do. I hate confrontations. Will try and avoid them as much as possible. Sometimes it negatively affects work. I have 0 ambition so my 'drive' is moving from one task to another to deliver what is expected out of me but I am never striving in a big way. I can be highly sarcastic and skeptical (not about all thing of course). Etc etc etc.

ceedy said...

@deepali

zero ambition...I like that...it makes life so easy...but I am sure it drives others up the wall....those working around you cause you have the "I care less attitude"

Deepali said...

Oh god no. Very rarely do I have a 'I care less attitude'. Highly task oriented if I have a task. The only time I might have that attitude is at the time of a promotion or something.
